A short jaunt east of Medicine Lodge on highway 160, and you’ll find a notable historical marker at the entrance to Memorial Peace Park, just east of the golf course. This marker informs us about the Treaty of 1867 which took place at the confluence of the Medicine River and Elm Creek, just southwest of this location.
Placed by the Kansas Historical Society tells of a gathering of soldiers, U.S. government officials, and an estimated 5,000 to 15,000 Native Americans. Representatives from five Southern Plains Tribes – the Arapahoe, Kiowa, Cheyenne, Kiowa-Apache, and Comanche -- came to meet and discuss possible solutions to the conflict over land caused by westward expansion.
